I have been seeing a lot of presentations in Keynote recently. Now I don’t know how to use Keynote (or Macs for that matter – there’s a reason I write in the left column on this blog). But I do know how to detect chart junk and the popular Keynote bar chart pictured above is a beautiful example. Not only does it use 3 dimensions to display data that only needs 2 dimensions, making it harder for the reader to digest the information. It also has a totally useless and very misleading ”depth effect” on the horizontal axis. This makes bars on the left look smaller even if they would represent exactly the same values. Just a very poor chart … .
