If you're going to achieve greater levels of success than the average person, your mindset is going to play a crucial, starring role, in making it happen.
Your mindset can literally make you or break you.
You should get to know your existing set of thoughts and beliefs…where they came from…and where they're going to take you.
Your thoughts create your future.
A few simple mindset hacks can make sure it's the future you want.
“Mind-sets are those collection of beliefs and thoughts that make up the mental attitude, inclination, habit or disposition that predetermines a person’s interpretations and responses to events, circumstances and situations.”
mindset.com
I'm not going to kid you, it takes a fair bit of effort to permanently change a long held belief, or set, of beliefs.
But it absolutely can be done. You're just going to have to put a bit of work in.
The following mindset hacks are here to kick-start the process for you…
Mindset Hacks For Entrepreneurs
#1. Stop Asking For Permission
Many of us, especially those of us who spent too many years working within large corporations before striking out on our own, really struggle with this one.
But the most successful people in just about any field you care to think of, don't struggle with this at all.
The most successful people rarely ask for permission, they just crack on, carving out the business and life they want.
“The only permission, the only validation, and the only opinion that matters in your quest for greatness is our own.”
Steve Maraboli
You don't need anybody's permission, you don't need validation, and you don't need their blessing.
And it's just as well, because few people would ever give it to you anyway.
As long as you are not doing anything illegal, or immoral, just get used to this idea.
#2. Don’t Allow Your Emotions To Control Your Life
I'm not suggesting you become a cold, emotional vacuum.
But, you can't ride every emotional wave from crest to trough and still expect to keep making significant progress in your life.
Because when you do that, it saps you of energy and often causes periods of inaction.
“Man is a logical machine run by the scoundrels of emotions.”
Raheel Farooq
Most of us let our emotions control our lives.
Accept that there will be occasions in your life that are naturally highly emotionally charged, which is fine.
But for the more day-to-day stuff…let it slide, don't get pulled by the undertow.
#3. Be Comfortable Not Knowing What You're Doing
At some point, we do everything we ever do, for the first time.
So what's the big deal?
Well, as we get older, for some reason we get more fearful of jumping in at the deep end.
But being in business for yourself, being an entrepreneur, you don't get the luxury of always knowing 100% what you're doing.
“Perfectionism is a dream killer, because it’s just fear disguised as trying to do your best. It just is.”
Mastin Kipp
Personally, now, I feel totally comfortable when I only have the slightest clue what I’m doing. I've just got used to the idea that trying to pursue ‘perfect' is a pointless quest.
It is essential that you get used to the feeling of not knowing what you’re doing…or you will get very little done!
#4. Don't Dwell On Failure
You do not have to dwell on failures.
There is a big difference between failure and dwelling on failure.
Failure is inevitable in business and in life.
“The difference between average people and achieving people is their perception of and response to failure.”
John C. Maxwell
Things going wrong, making mistakes…dealing with failure is part of your job as an entrepreneur. There's no way around it.
Take your failures on the chin. Suck 'em up and move on.
#5. Plan Results, Not Time
Most of us aren't as productive as we’d like to be.
We get things done, but we know we’re capable of more.
Part of the problem is in how many of us plan out work. Usually a long list of tasks that should fit into the time we have available.
But this approach is far from the best way to go about increasing productivity.
“Symbols of productivity ARE NOT productivity.”
Richie Norton
Write down the key result you intend to produce on any given day.
This simple change moves you out of a time-based mindset, to a results-based mindset.
You should be more focused on what you want to produce, then on how you’ll spend your time.
Produce something worthwhile every day.
#6. Pay Attention To Your Thoughts
You are not your thoughts.
But, you should observe your thoughts diligently.
Thoughts jump into our heads in the blink of an eye, so there is nothing to worry about in having the odd negative, or even destructive thought.
Just keep an eye on the thoughts that return time and again, because these are not so random.
“Nothing can harm you as much as your own thoughts unguarded.”
Buddha
Be the observer of your thoughts as they come and go.
And develop an awareness of the more persistent ones. If there is a lot of negativity they are worth replacing with more helpful thoughts.
Do not let your thoughts define you…instead define your thoughts.
#7. Decide What You Want To Believe
You can believe whatever you want to believe.
Literally anything.
Think about all the bat-sh!t crazy stuff people have believed in over the years…including right now.
About 12 million people currently believe that humans are immortal and made up of billions of ‘thetans’, or past lives.
Approximately 10 million people in the US believe that earth is actually ruled by interstellar lizards in people suits. David Icke originally planted this belief in people's heads…he believes that the Queen of England is a blood-drinking, shape-shifting alien.
That's just a couple of examples out of hundreds.
“Believing is a type of magic. It can make something true.”
Emily Pan
Okay just one more. This one is at an individual level, so not cult like stuff, just one person who has decided on a belief for themselves…
…Megan Fox is afraid of flying. So she listens to Britney Spears when she flies, because she believes that she cannot die while listening to Britney Spears.
Our minds are more than open to the power of suggestion.
You do not need to provide any evidence to support your new belief.
You can decide to believe in your ability to become a staggeringly successful entrepreneur.
#8. Ask Yourself Questions
Set your mind to work on a question.
And then step back, give it some time.
Don't nag by asking again and again, just trust in the beautiful efficient elegance of the human mind.
From easy stuff, to complex stuff, your mind will find the answer.
It works particularly well if you ask yourself a question before going to sleep.
“The answers you seek , never come when the mind is busy. They come when the mind is free.”
Unknown
You already have the answer to your question, you just have to find your best way of coaxing it out from your subconscious mind.
#9. Acknowledge Results You've Already Achieved
Acknowledge, and give yourself credit for the results and accomplishments you've already achieved.
It's easy to forget about all the important stuff we've already created in our lives.
Your job, your career, your sports accomplishments, your relationships, your home, your kids…etc.
“Accomplishments give you a sense of confidence and encouragement.”
Catherine Pulsifer
When you start noticing the results in your life, you will start to see that there was some intention in setting out to achieve those great results.
This will show you that everything starts with intention, that you have been there before, and that it is a repeatable process.
#10. Set Goals For Fun
This is one of the most unexpected yet profound mindset hacks I know.
It has the power to totally shift goal setting to something you do simply for the fun of it.
All of the usual seriousness just set aside.
“A goal should scare you a little, and excite you a lot.”
Joe Vitale
It comes from the fact that you don’t have to do any of it. None of it.
You could simply let life pass you by. No goals, no achievements.
You don't have to do anything. And you'd still be you, living and breathing…still completely worthy.
This is an incredibly liberating place to start from. It will take the weight out of your goal setting and hopefully make it all a lot more fun.
#11. Affirmations
Affirmations, like visualisation, get a bit of a bad press these days.
And that's because the use of affirmations has been jumped on my lazy people, who think you can sit around all-day doing nothing, so long as you keep telling yourself great things, and success will come to you.
It won't!
Affirmations are a seriously powerful tool to get your mind focused on where you want to go, and on what you want to achieve.
“Affirmations are positive statements that can help you to challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts. When you repeat them often, and believe in them, you can start to make positive changes.”
MindTools.com
Some people advocate writing them down, or at least saying them out loud, but neither of those approaches work as well for me as simply coming up with a nice fluid affirmation, and running it through my mind regularly…like multiple times a day.
Try it out right now!
Come up with a super positive sentence that you can just repeat internally numerous times a day.
Affirmations are also great to use when you notice you have some negative internal dialogue going on…you can just replace the negative stuff with your positive stuff.
#12. Align Yourself With Your Future Self
Imagine the person you wish to be.
Your very own future avatar.
What are your future beliefs?
What does a normal day in the life of the future you look like?
Imagine it…visualise it…feel it.
This will become your reality!
“To be a great champion, you must believe you are the best. If you're not, pretend you are.”
Muhammad Ali
Becoming the person you want to be isn’t achieved by waiting until you get results.
The secret is to do the opposite. You have to start thinking and feeling as your future self right now.
I'm not talking about ignoring your current reality here, that will end in disaster.
This is about being totally responsible for your current reality, but also developing a crystal clear picture of yourself in the future.
So clear that you can begin to act like it is already your day-to-day reality.
#13. Remove Limiting Vocabulary
The words we use, and the way we use them is important.
Many of us use negative words and phrases way too much.
Tony Robbins recommends removing words like “can’t,” “don’t,” “not able,” “never,” etc. from our vocabularies.
Even words like “but” and short phrases like “I have to” are incredibly negative.
“Words can inspire. And words can destroy. Choose yours well.”
Robin Sharma
Do you think the world’s most successful people are using many of these words very often?
I doubt it.
When you use these types of words, you not only come cross as negative to others, but you are also impressing the negativity on your subconscious mind.
